Another candidate could be to develop something like a Wikimedia thematic organization around climate justice.

Another candidate could be to work on Cable Green's idea of an "SDG degree", as per Ryan Merkley's Wikimania 2019 talk.

Some thoughts regarding organizational openness:

  • every open step in a research cycle is essentially an invitation to collaborate, but just as most GitHub repos or Wikia wikis had only one contributor, most entries in open research notebooks and similar places never receive any comment, in part because everyone is busy working on "their own" projects
    • most current research projects are designed to be performed by an individual or comparatively small-scale team, who have to cover all aspects of their research project, even though they may be the experts only in some of them
      • working in the open allows to
        • document best practice as well as issues
        • signal the need for assistance, or provide assistance
  • There is an organization called "Project Include" that states
    • "We are a non-profit that uses data and advocacy to accelerate diversity and inclusion solutions in the tech industry."

      • To me, diversity and inclusion is deeply intertwined with openness, and open science is largely online and thus essentially part of the tech community, albeit not necessarily the tech industry.

I have decided to focus on contributing systematically to open projects run by others.
Still thinking about how to name/ frame that but have begun to draft my responses to the form questions.

OK, the interview just took place. Some questions they asked:

  • Can you provide an overview of what the project is about?
  • What would be the results of your project?
  • Can you tell us about what you did with the Flash Grant you got a while back?
  • Do you have any questions for us?
