A little tweet to mark the occasion: https://twitter.com/EvoMRI/status/1019125277841117184 . |
I wrote the above lines from Johannesburg, which is where Barack Obama gave the Mandela Centennial lecture today. Some pointers in https://twitter.com/Wikimania/status/1019290473188511744 . |
I had thought about starting a Wikipedia article today in honour of my grandmother, and it ended up being about S/2016 J 2, a Jupiter moon, whose discovery was announced today along with that of 9 others: https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/17/17577784/jupiter-moons-carnegie-science-blanco-telescope-valetudo . |
All 10 of them are now both on the English Wikipedia and on Wikidata, albeit with very rudimentary information. |
There is a French version of those Wikipedia stub articles too, e.g. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/2016_J_2 . Meanwhile, waves of tweets on Mandela are being posted, e.g. https://twitter.com/hashtag/Madiba?src=hash . |
I also looked at Mandela's Scholia profile: |
I took a first look at things named after him: https://twitter.com/EvoMRI/status/1019379972438396933 . |
Turns out Estonia celebrated its centenary as well on July 17: https://www.ev100.ee/en . |
Closing this with a Wikidata query for publications by people named Anna: SELECT ?publication ?publicationLabel ?author ?authorLabel WHERE {
?publication wdt:P50 ?author .
?author wdt:P21 wd:Q6581072 ; wdt:P735 wd:Q666578 .

I do not often go public with these things but having just arrived in Johannesburg on my way to Cape Town for Wikimania 2018, tomorrow's centenary of Nelson Mandela is dominating the headlines here at the news stands, which resonates well with me being in centenarian mood for my grandmother, who was "Omi Anni" to me.
